It's not the darkness scares me

nor the night that always dawns.

A dusky sight that haunts me

behind closed curtains drawn.

The blackness, I do not fear.

Tis the shadows, I cannot see.

I know they lurk there.

They watch me from a distance

waiting for me.

Soulless, gargoyles

mercilessly.

I hear them softly call my name

I smell their breath,

sickly, sticky, sweet.

My mind is failing, slowly

I am going Insane.

I choose the madness

they will have me in death.

Soft tapping on my window pane

Tap, tap, tap

a long finger nail

Tap, tap, tap

Driving my thoughts...

further from my mind

all I hear and see

these creatures that wish to take me.

I cannot think

only of them, outside in the world

watching me.

The shadows come

in the blackness of night

dead men walking

they move in an eerie silence

out of sight.

I wait each day as the night draws in.

A prisoner, in the dark.

A plight of committed sin.

Cocooned in a web

black with despair

weaved with delicate care

wanton offspring

ready to bear.

A growing brood of lost souls

wonder through the darkness.

Low wails, tormented cries

echo in the dead of night.

A prayer lingers on my lips

time ticks

Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock

I hear a voice inside my head.

All lies, all lies, all lies

Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock

Tap, tap, tap

Tap, tap, tap

Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock

A strangled scream

lodged within my throat

threatens to erupt, explode.

Out there in the midnight black

the monsters roam

I wait out the night

I wait for the things in the dark to go.

They leave at sunlight

for now this is so.

My mind is weaker

every single day.

Thoughts are lost

drowned in terror.

My fears grow

the grey of winter, well on her way.

Days grow darker, nights stay longer.

The creatures will come,

they have time to plan.

To catch me,

when I do not know

they are hiding there.

To catch me,

when I am unaware.

Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock

Condemned by demons a losing fight.

I cannot hide forever, this they know.

They have me in their sight,

it's not the darkness scares me

tis the shadows in the night.

They are growing, I know there are more.

I see them when they come;

dark shapes in the greying light.

They look for me.

Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock

Tap, tap, tap

There are others, they are coming.

I curse the blackness, I cannot see.

Tap, tap, tap

It's not the darkness scares me

Tis the evil in the night.

It's not the darkness scares me

Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock

Tis the shadows, I must fight.

Tap, tap, tap...

This poem is beautiful. It definitely reminds me of me. Especially when i'm in a moment of naught but deep, dark thoughts. Vote up and beautiful.

Yes, it did add something to the flow; I liked it; I was just asking. I do that sometimes with poetry! It's one area where we have the freedom of "poetic license"; cool.

Glad you liked it. Funny, I had put in the word 'that', but decided it didn't flow the way I wanted, so I took it out. Cool you noticed.

Awesome. I have long maintained that the things in the shadows are worse than the darkness. When I get left at home alone, every light in the house is on. Good to know I'm not alone.

.........

The first few lines captured my love for compelling verse!

(But did you leave out the word "that"? Just asking.)

At any rate, very interesting poem; I love it!

P.S.

Don't let solitude get to you too much! You are not alone in this world.
