Dolphin Information:

The word Dolphin comes from the Greek word Delphis.

These highly sociable animals enjoy living in small groups, known as pods. They sometimes merge together to form larger pods with hundreds of dolphins on particular occasions. These intelligent animals love to play and are very curious creatures. Mostly eating fish, they make a good team when it comes to dinner time: forming what is known as a bait ball. The dolphins force the fish into the centre of their pod. They continue to circle around the fish preventing any chance of escape. Calmly taking turns to have a little nibble.

These friendly carnivores are found world wide with more than thirty different species. Often associated with mythology these marine mammals are very affectionate and will take care of their sick or hindered companions. However like many humans they have a jealous demon streak and will quickly fight for the girl of their dreams, even killing young dolphins (calves) in the process. The bull (male) is very capable of exiling a conquered opponent. While the cow (female) is a very caring mother.

Dolphins are often kept in captivity in many zoos and sea worlds around the globe. Rehabilitation is one thing, however exercising tricks for human entertainment is unnecessary and provides a good topic for a debate on our morals regarding captivity of wild animals.

The photos shown on this page, include photos taken off the coast of Madeira. A small Island in the Atlantic Ocean near the mainland of Portugal. We are very fortunate to regularly see families of dolphins. There's a migrating path which operates from April through to October (more or less) consistently travelled by dolphins and wales. We do have a few families that stay with us all year round, and these guys are amazingly friendly and love to swim along side the boats, leaping from the water twirling around before somersaulting head first back into the sea. The dolphins in the photos thrilled us (dolphin watchers) with their acrobatics and demonstrative leaps. Hundreds of dolphins delightfully posed for trigger happy snappers giving everyone a wonderful day to remember. Absolutely fabulous.

Dance With Me

Sleek your silver back

breaks the white horses race

divine elegance

mystic grace.

The ocean, your ballroom

you glide and dance

the sea your partner

the ocean chants.

A ballerina on tip toe

rising from the deep.

Beautiful pirouette

a spell-bounding leap.

The Red Sea

Frenzied Feeding

Surf

Players of the sea

you race to find your wave

riding a majestic crest

adrenaline crave.

Kings of the ocean

dare devils of the sea

surf your red wave

forever breaking free.

*****

Majestic Class

White bellied common

to bottle-nose.

Rough toothed

with attitude.

Spotted or hourglass

long beak

short beak

lad or lass

from stripe to spinner

majestic class.

*****

Feeding

Gulls swoop

to eat fish

frenzied to the surface

a sharing dish.

In your pod

a welcome place

dinner is served

with combined grace.

*****

Beautiful You

Shiny skin

grey to blue; agility

wonderful you.

Poise and pride

elegant stance

smooth rhythm

white eyed glance; serenity

mystery

beautiful you.

On Tip Toe: Majestic Dancer Of The Deep Blue Sea

The Deep

Sunshine kissed waters, bedazzled stolen jewels;

ripples feed to further gain.

A silver splash, rainbow scaled prism,

droplets on your skin, a cold cold rain.

Taste the waters and find your path;

knowing secrets from the deeps.

The laws of the ocean all hidden treasure; finder keeps.

Creature of the open sea

white horses speed, a blue gliding blade.

Explode from the ocean deeps, ride the crystal wave.

Magical beauty, mystery, enchanting...

lavender rose

dancing slippered feet, embedded golden toes.

Our Moment

My heart beats within it's cage

a heavy breath held tightly.

An ivory belly gleams against blue.

I reach out...

to touch your shining skin.

You twist and turn playfully

folic among the waves.

The white of your eye rolls,

watching me

we look to each other,

a brief moment

I see your soul

you see mine

kindred spirits; for a second in time.
